چکیده

IN EXPERIMENTS oti the dog heart-lung preparation which led to the formulation of the well-known "Law of the Heart," Patterson, Piper and Starling observed that when cardiac work was augmented, ventricular volume sometimes increased in the face of a constant left ventricular end-diastolic pressure. These investigators concluded that the strength of myocardial contraction was a function of end-diastolic fiber length.Although this view is supported by the experiments of Kozawa, other investigators have concluded that the initial intraventricular tension" or both the end-diastolic fiber length and the initial tension" are responsible for the characteristics of the subsequent contraction.

The Impact of Cardiac Rehabilitation on Pulmonary Artery Systolic Pressure and Left Ventricular End-Diastolic Pressure in Patients after Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery

Background:Cardiac rehabilitation program (CRP) is a useful method of modifying cardiovascular risk factors, improving life expectancy and quality of life in patients with ischemic heart disease (IHD). The present study was conducted to evaluate the effects of cardiac rehabilitation on the pulmonary artery systolic pressure (PASP) and left ventricular end-diastolic pressure (LV...

The Correlation between Left and Right Ventricular Ejection Fractions in Patients with Ischemic Heart Disease, Documented by Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Introduction: The correlation between right and left ventricular ejection fractions (RVEF and LVEF, respectively) has been studied in only a small number of patients with a marked decrease in RVEF and LVEF. The aim of the present study was to compare LVEF and RVEF in patients with ischemic heart disease. RVEF and LVEF were measured by Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (CMR) imaging. Materials a...

Continuous positive-pressure ventilation decreases right and left ventricular end-diastolic volumes in the dog.

We investigated the mechanism(s) responsible for the decreased cardiac output during continuous positive-pressure ventilation (CPPV). Seven dogs were anesthetized with chloralose-urethane, intubated, and ventilated using a volume ventilator. We measured heart rate, stroke volume, and the determinants of stroke volume: left and right ventricular end-diastolic volumes, isovolumic and ejection pha...

Is postextrasystolic potentiation dependent on Starling's law? Biplane angiographic studies in normal subjects.

The cineangiograms of 26 normal subjects were analyzed to study the effect of Starling's mechanism on postextrasystolic potentiation. The end-diastolic volumes (single plane and biplane) of the left ventricle were similar in the regular sinus beat before an extrasystole and sequential sinus beats after an extrasystole. However, the ejection fraction, mean normalized systolic ejection rate, mean...
